Dangerous effects of rhythmic gymnastics on developing girls.
Many girls aspire to be Olympic gymnasts, but only a few do. The methods for teaching are very demanding and at advanced levels, they need to give up other areas of their lives. This can have negative consequences for development. Parents should note that in the participation of moderate rhythmic gymnastics, it is less likely to cause damage.
Some effects may be the following:
Stunted growth
They are especially vulnerable to delaying puberty. These girls often have their periods too late, or stop menstruating for an extended time. This can be due to excessive training, extreme diets and stress associated with the sport.
Eating Disorders
Coaches sometimes pressure their team members to lose weight and young women are especially vulnerable to this. The body with curves of an adolescent is generally considered undesirable in gymnastics.
Injuries
Gymnastics is a high impact sport, and a bad step can cause serious injuries. Broken bones and serious sprains are common among gymnasts.
Psychological problems
The culture of gymnastics can sometimes pressure participants to achieve perfection at all costs and many gymnasts may become overinsulated.
